DJ NaNa & Rich Kidd - Confusion from Philip Rae on Vimeo.

<img src="http://payload50.cargocollective.com/1/0/22002/3300783/tumblr_m2wvh09h7x1ruoq86o1_r1_500.gif" width="500" height="281" width_o="500" height_o="281" src_o="http://payload50.cargocollective.com/1/0/22002/3300783/tumblr_m2wvh09h7x1ruoq86o1_r1_500_o.gif" data-mid="16931423" border="0" align="left"/>

The idea of the video was to create as much visual confusion as possible. The concept was based off of the Dadaists Exquisite Corpse. We [Philip Rae & Marie Richer] contacted several Designers and Visual Artists from Toronto, Canada and abroad (Spain, France, Italy) and gave them a lyric to interpret, with no clue what was before or after. For many of the international artists, english was their second language, which offered an extra layer of complexity and confusion in itself.

There was no guide lines except the length of the lyric (in seconds and frames) and the dimensions of the footage or still.

The concept of my frames focused on the paradox of the deadly antidote—when, historically, some antidotes have been just as dangerous as the diseases themselves. I turned to medical engravings from the 18th century to draw out feelings of combined frailty and clinical detachment, with an inky, smoky presence that bleeds into the illustrations and begins to overtake the frail etchings.

I worked with the OCAD U Student press to rework their identity after the launch of the new OCAD U logo.

The press brings together a mixture of old and new: The mixing of old ideas and new intellectuals, old processes and new interpretations, innovations and old discoveries.

The logo infers a history that is slowly being forgotten: the hand setting of type. The reversed letters references the wrong-reading layout of the printing process.
To withstand a myriad of unknown applications, screen printing, stamps, and small sizes, the logo was kept simple and unadorned.

Since thrift and craftiness is part of the mantra of the student press, and of the realities of the student budget, off-cuts and rejected prints from previous publications were re-purposed into double-sided business cards, wrapped with a label. Cards can be made in bulk and labels printed as needed.

I was approached by L. Condoms to present ideas for their new, slimmer condom package to match new shelf configurations.
Previous versions of the package used only one line of text to distinguish varieties.
Now each variety is easily distinguished according to the rich, eye-catching colours and African-inspired patterns.
L. matches donations of their sustainably-sourced condoms. One package is donated directly to African villages for every package purchased. Using the fashion-inspired brand language, this key difference is brought to the front and centre of the design.
As you open the package, you tear away a strip of the pattern, implying the breaking of cycles, patterns, and oppression.
The text underneath reads, "This is going to be world changing sex."

I worked with the Blackberry User Experience (UX) team to update and contemporize the Blackberry icon set for OS 7.
I worked with the UX team on creation, iteration, ideation, critique and competitive analysis of icons.

We were challenged with maintaining the overall iconography used in the previous OS versions. However, to emphasize the higher-definition displays and maintain step with the competition, we developed new icons.

The icons maintain the overall silhouette and structure of OS 6, however the general feel focused on rich, premium textures and colours. The overall look & feel reinforce both the industrial design and the high-end, enterprise brand language.

Visit Vegan Peasant Catering

I was approached by Vegan Peasant Catering to re-visit their logo and identity system.
The new identity had to be approachable and homey ('peasant food'), while still maintaining a sense of sophistication and luxury.
After some discussion, the idea of "joy" was decided as the brand's emotional core.
The identity system had to apply to many points of contact and work within a very low budget.
A seal and wordmark give the brand versatility, and the brand's visibility is primarily through stickers and stamps.
Ink stamps of vegetables (mushrooms, onions, avocados and others) were created as a low-cost way to add spontinaeity and playfulness to the identity system, in lieu of relying too heavily on expensive food photography.

This project was featured in DesignEdge Magazine: ReLogo (Jan 2012)

Launch Holbrook & Associates' Website

Holbrook & Associates is a well-known Toronto landscape architecture firm.

The agency works primarily with private clients, and focuses on a minimalist, clean aesthetic that integrates furniture and architecture into the garden.

I worked with Ron Holbrook to develop a clean and simple webpage and wordmark that spoke to his history as a leading landscape architect and his refined, minimalist sense of style.

For a school project, I decided to redesign a slightly unusual publication: a lifestyle magazine for transsexuals—specifically, for those who have transitioned from women to men, and their supporters.
The original magazine spoke to more of a ’zine format and style. In my redesign, I decided to change the way the target audience was being framed—moving from a punk-esque, counter-culture style to that of exclusive, avant-garde fashion and art.
Philosophically, I wondered how design can manipulate the interpretation of subcultures. What is the difference between marginalization and exclusivity? What is the difference between avant garde and outsider? So what happens when a marginalized group is treated as exclusive, as high culture?
I thought I would give it a try, and this redesign of Original Plumbing is the result.

I worked with Kyle Nielsen, another OCAD student, on the annual graduation exhibition.
We worked with the advertising chair, Tony Kerr, to come up with visuals and concept.
The "Enter OCAD" campaign leverages existing OCAD brand identity. We leveraged OCAD's brand colour palette, and added complimentary colours, to use for wayfinding.
The arrows are meant to point to the Sharpe Centre, the iconic tabletop found at 100 McCaul Street, while the grids of squares and rectangles ties back both to the OCAD identity, and the iconic building designed by Will Alsop.

In this school branding project, the Weinstein brothers started a new movie studio focusing on artistic, less mainstream films.

My focus was on the “moment of truth” and the concept of guided viewing. Through the director’s eye, a film guides us through a bigger narrative, piece by selected piece. I wanted to capture the feeling of walking into a large narrative, into something monumental and expansive.

This feeling of monumentality was applied to the back of the letterhead, where images from feature films appear. Movie studios often have special letterheads for each of their feature films. I carried on this tradition within the branding system.

In the opening sequence, a woman is shown walking through a field of wheat. However, the moment is fleeting, meant to imply that there is a larger narrative that the viewer is only sampling. The wheat is symbolic of Cronus, the god of harvest.

In this project, I worked with 7 other undergrad designers, 3 professors and a team of human factors analysts at the University Health Networks (UHN).

UHN approached us to solve a part of a larger, systemic healthcare issue involving improper, and fatal, dosings of chemotherapy.

We were asked to redesign the forms used to administer chemotherapy in wards across Canada. With many restrictions and cultural barriers to change, these forms are being used as templates for setting national standards in chemotherapy administration.

These recommendations and templates are available for download here (PDF)

And more information is available here.
